A taco stuffed with fried calamari and topped with red cabbage is among the menu offerings with a fusion twist at Gwinnett County’s Tequila Mama Taqueria locations.

The entire family is invited for the casual, lively dining experience at Tequila Mama Taqueria. But make no mistake, this is no ordinary taco joint.

Instead, fresh and multi-cultural are always the daily specials at this locally owned fusion restaurant chain that has fast become a popular destination for dining in Gwinnett County.

At Mama’s, as the restaurant is popularly known, scratch-made tacos top a lengthy menu. Instead of the average cheese, chicken and beef, Mama’s tacos feature flavors from around the world.

“Whether you’re in the mood for Mexican, Asian, Latin American, American or something in between, Mama has something made just for you using her all-time favorite taco as a way to share these beautiful flavors,” said Jenny Germosen, chief operating officer for the taqueria chain.

Mama’s puts a fusion twist on its popular tacos to provide a unique dining experience. A favorite is the La Bamba, a specialty taco stuffed with crispy fried shrimp tossed in sriracha aioli and drizzled with unagi (Japanese term for freshwater eel) and island slaw. The Bulgogi, a Korean term for a thinly sliced grilled meat, features a Latin twist on a Korean barbecue classic with sauteed peppers and onions, cilantro and cotija cheese plus island slaw and sriracha aioli.

Though the specialty tacos are popular, Mama’s menu also includes entrees such as street tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas and bowls — all with a fusion twist. Menu offerings like Korean Krack fries, Spanish-inspired tapas, ahi tuna tostada and Colombian empanadas add to the multi-cultural menu theme.

Food and fun at three locations

The fusion dining experience is the brainchild of veteran restaurant owners and entrepreneurs Hector Abreu and Blake Rogers. The two joined forces to open the original Tequila Mama location in Suwanee’s downtown district in 2019. A second location opened in Buford last year, and a third one is slated for a June opening in Dacula.

Beyond food, the restaurant chain is known for offering a fun dining experience. The Suwanee location features outdoor dining where diners are welcome to bring their leashed dogs. The Buford location includes both a rooftop patio and a playground that’s a hit with younger guests. Each location, including the newest in Dacula, features Tequila Mama’s signature double bar.

The small chain is another symbol of the booming economic development occurring in Georgia, and especially Gwinnett County. Small businesses are the growth engines for the region’s economy, said Ashlie Franklin, the Walton Gas commercial account representative who serves Tequila Mama.

During May, Tequila Mama joins other restaurants and businesses in the state and nation to recognize Small Business Month. Walton Gas, also a small business, is celebrating right along with our customers.

“It’s a pleasure to help our local small businesses grow and thrive,” said Franklin. “We’re here to provide the energy entrepreneurs need to see their dreams become reality.”
